Copa del Rey Regatta 2011 - Palma de Mallorca

From July 31st to 06 August Palma de Mallorca hosts the "The King's Cup¨ Regatta. The chosen location is Palm Bay, known as one of the best regattas in Europe. Characteristical for this place is the great weather, moreover exactly in the month of August there is a perfect sea breeze, which provice excellent conditions for this sport. Palma has been the scene for the King's Cup Regatta for over 20 years.

This sporting event is known as the highest level sailing competition in Spain and the Mediterranean. There have already been 29 editions and since the start it has been characterized as one of the best of this kind in Europe. The main feature of the Copa del Rey is the competition of boats of different sizes. This has caused the competitors many concerns, because depending on the appearance and disappearance of the wind speed and direction, changes in the classification can be very striking.

The King´s Cup regatta originated in 1982, with the help of the National Sailing Association and the Real Club Náutico of Palma, and  since then this sporting event has been improving year after year, to become what it is today, one of the best in Europe. However, the sixteenth edition (1998) that counted 127 participants positioned the King's Cup Regatta as the best in the world. The race reached the highest standard on the level of sail competitions. This success has been achieved through much effort by the organizers and thanks to this the participation in the regatta never drops below a hundred participants in each edition.

IMS system development has been slow and complex, and the Cup became a sort of test to adjust the ratings and thus made the competition between unequally sized ships more fair. On the stage we saw a lot of Spanish come by along the history of the Copa del Rey, among them we can name Cusí ("Rogue", 2000) or Suevos ("Nationale Nederlanden", 1997) and others such as the "Cutty Sark" of Pelayo de la Mata, that won the Cup in 96 and 97, the "Zurich" of Manuel Chirivella (1999) or "Fades" (2000) of José Manuel Cardesín.

All history and prestige of this regatta, together with the expansion of ground facilities and increased resources on the water, cause a continuous growth and improvement of the competition year after year. A must for lovers and fans of this sport, do not miss the 30th edition of the King's Cup Regatta, the address is Real Club Náutico de Palma, San Pedro 1, 07012 Palma (Mallorca).
