In this article some cultural tips when visiting Murcia and its surroundings.

La Unión in Murcia presents one of the most important flamenco festivals in Spain, the 'Festival Internacional del Cante de las Minas'. This year the 51st edition is held from August 3rd to 13th, with excellent flamenco performances, competitions and animated parties.

Sentiment, art and flamenco are cited each year in La Union, a mining town in Murcia. The festival started out in 1961 as a flamenco singing competition, singing for the mine workers. In 1980 guitar was added to the competition, and in 1993 also dance. During the festival the whole town is characterized by flamenco and the public market of La Union is the site for performances of renowned artists as well as new candidates who will try to excite the audiences and try to win the desired trophy: the Mining Lamp. Further there are exhibitions, presentations of books and videos, flamenco poetry, film, lots of parties and open-mike sessions where everybody can participate. The festivities go on until early in the morning when you can experience the flamenco sunrises.

Journalist Carlos Herrera will do the opening speech of the International Festival ¨ Cante de las Minas de La Union 2011¨ and then make place for the performances of previous year's winners of the competition: Miguel Ortega (Mining Lamp); Francisco Moncayo (Mining Pilgrim´s Staff) Jesus Fernandez (Trowel Trophy) and Abdon Alcaraz, Instrumentalist Award.

This year´s Festival will pay tribute posthumously to singer Enrique Morente and includes performances from singer Antonio Alvarez ´Pitingo´ (August 5th), Estrella Morente (August 6th), the dancer Juan Manuel Fernandez 'Farruquito' (August 7th), the singer Diego 'El Cigala' (August 9th) and guitarist José Fernández Torres 'Tomatito' together with dancer and choreographer Blanca del Rey (August 8th), owner of Corral de la Morería, a legendary flamenco place in Madrid, who will say goodbye to the stage giving her last public performances on the Festival del Cante de las Minas.

The flamenco contest will be held on August 10th, 11th and 12th, with three semifinals, and with the grand final on August 13th. Tickets for the first two days are free.
