For the first two weeks of September the city of Murcia comes alive with parades, pageants and folklore during the annual feria. Special celebrations take place in honour of the city's patron saint, La Virgen de la Fuensanta. The fair is held during September, with different festive events in a range of venues throughout the city.

Concerts, dancing, exhibitions, parades and games make up this festival and will likely have people remembering it for years. It's actually a number of smaller festivals with their own traditions incorporated together. Murcia was once a Moorish kingdom, so it offers both Moorish and Christian tradition (the Moors and Christians festival), but in the meantime the city also organizes a Pop Festival, concerts, the Feria Taurina (the bullfighting fair hosted by the Condomina bullring featuring novilladas, the bullfights with young bulls, mounted bullfights and normal bullfights), a cattle fair, a pilgrimage, the International Mediterranean Folklore Festival, and Murcia's sister city Lodz in Poland brings festivities from central Europe as well. Further there are golf tournaments, competitions, video screenings, traditional games, dinners and a lot of parties. The Huertos del Malecón fairground and the Plaza Romea square are important sites during these weeks.

A great chance to see a multitude of fiestas going on at the same time and to try discover the origins of each activity: Moorish, Catholic, Polish, pop,...? Come and experience it for yourself.
Apart from the range of fiestas there are of course also plenty of possibilities to relax, see and do in and around Murcia:  Murcia´s beaches, nature, the city of Murcía and the salty lagoon at Mar Menor are all within easy range with a rental car. You can rent your car conveniently upon arrival at Murcía airport. If you would like more information on car rentals and prices in Murcia, please visit AurigaCrown´s website.

La Tomatina

AurigaCrown Car Hire offers their clients ideas on different events and places to visit during their stay in Spain. Providing options for visits that are within easy reach with a rental car, nice routes, places to visit and from where to start. In this article some tips for visiting Valencia and its surroundings.

At 40 minutes from Valencia city we find the town Buñol, famous for its popular festival ¨La Tomatina¨. The festival is especially popular among young people that invade the small town for an almighty tomato fight, where participants throw tomatoes at each other. This year the festival is held on Wednesday August 31st.

The origin of the Tomatina dates back to 1944 when, as is said, when some disguised people came by, those who had not been able to join, began a battle with the participants and both ended up throwing vegetables at each other. The tomato fight was repeated the following year and after several permissions and prohibitions Tomatina was established as an official festival in 1959.

Later, when the festival was broadcasted on television, the Tomatina became popular throughout the whole country. For several years the council pays for tomatoes that are released during the battle, and with the large number of participants, they need about 125.000 kilos of them!

The festivities begin the night before and overnight the population of the village quadruples, in the morning there is a breakfast at the main square and by 11am a 30.000-strong army has prepared for action. Five bulbous, tomato-packed rockets are sent into the sky and the masses start their fight - it's every man and woman for themselves.

There are very few rules in La Tomatina: it is compulsory to squish your tomato before throwing it into the red blur of the crowd, other projectiles are not allowed. You don´t have to worry about running out of ammunition as ripe fruit is being brought in by trucks. Participants have two hours to hurl at thousands of enemies.

The aftermath of La Tomatina puts any blood-injected, horror-film set to shame. Don't count on recognising your friends in the red blur. Within hours, though, the town is transformed back to its normal condition.

A nice opportunity though to get rid of accumulated stress, plus the fact that the liquid of tomatoes is an excellent skin treatment, the Tomatina may be a good way to relax. Of course there is much more to do and see in and around Valencia. The city of Valencia offers an extensive amount of sights and experiences like the science park, the luxurious port area, the nice beaches, the old town, the lively nightlife, shopping, the famous Valencian gastronomy and surrounding areas like the nature reserve ¨La Albufera¨, ¨Sagunto¨ a Moorish citadel and ¨Alto Turia¨ an attractive valley great for picknicks and also an important vine-growing area. The commodity of a rental car will easily get you to all places. AurigaCrown has an office at Valencia airport so you can conveniently pick up your car directly upon arrival. Please check our website for more information on rental cars, fleet and prices.

Malaga hosts the exhibition The modern tradition of the Carmen Thyssen collection. Monet, Picasso, Matisse, Miró. From June 14 to October 16, 2011.

AurigaCrown Car Hire offers their clients ideas on different events and places to visit during their stay in Spain. Providing options for visits that are within easy reach with a rental car, nice routes, places to visit and from where to start. In this article some cultural tips when visiting Malaga and its surroundings.

The first temporary exhibition has arrived, "The Modern Tradition," with nineteenth-century Spanish art represented by works brought from the Thyssen museum in Madrid and the National Museum of Catalonia. In addition there is a new part composed of paintings from the private collection of Baroness Carmen Thyssen, which will be exhibited for the first time. Further, international artists such as Matisse, Braque and Monet are present to show the influence of these artists on Spanish art.
The main purpose of the exhibition is to tell the story of the different trends of the twentieth century and their influence on Spanish art.  This is done by the exhibition of works from Picasso, Gris, Miró and Tàpies and works from the private collection of Carmen Thyssen. More than a third of the sixty pieces that are part of this fantastic exhibition were brought from the Thyssen Museum in Madrid, including dazzling works like "The House among the Roses" by Monet. To the delight of Malaga and its visitors, these works will be at the Thyssen Museum in Malaga until October 16th.

The works that form the exhibition represent each stage of modernism from the more naturalistic and realistic works of Casas and Rusiñol, followed by the tragic and social dimension of Nonell, the decorative and 'art nouveau' of Anglada, the tragic and decorative of Mir and the noucentisme of Suñer. The third part of the exhibition comprises the "secret part" of the collection of Carmen Thyssen. With this exhibition the Baroness has shown that she possesses paintings that nobody could have imagined that they would be part of her collection, furthermore the Baroness closely followed the placement of all painting.

It is important to emphasize that the exhibition features paintings of great value, defined by the exhibition curator, Guillermo Solana, like mentioning "the stars of the show". As for example ¨The House among the Roses¨ (Monet, 1925), which is displayed next to ¨The Courtyard of the Sorolla House¨ (Sorolla, 1917), ¨Portuguese¨ (Delaunay, 1916) and ¨Sitting Woman¨(Gris, 1917). Besides those ¨The Harvesters¨ from Picasso, which does not belong to Cubism, but to Fauvism, and will certainly surprise visitors with its pure colours. The same goes for ¨Marina L'Estaque¨ (Braque, 1906) and the ¨Portuguese¨ by Delaunay.

The modern tradition is characterized as the best exposition Malaga and entire Andalusia ever had. A unique exhibition with works from the Thyssen Museum and the National Museum of Catalonia that will be open to the public until October 16th. With, what´s more, a third of the exhibition coming from the private collection of Carmen Thyssen that has never been shown before. Be sure to visit "The modern tradition" in the Carmen Thyssen Museum in Malaga, a rewarding experience for you and your family.

Apart from this great exhibitions there is of course much more to see and to do in and around Malaga. Cultural visits in Malaga, Marbella, Granada, Seville, or some days of relax on the beach, hikes in nature, all within easy reach with your rental car.

You can conveniently rent your car directly upon arrival at Malaga airport or next to Malaga train station. For more information on our fleet, offices and/or prices, please visit AurigaCrown´s website.

Copa del Rey Regatta 2011 - Palma de Mallorca

From July 31st to 06 August Palma de Mallorca hosts the "The King's Cup¨ Regatta. The chosen location is Palm Bay, known as one of the best regattas in Europe. Characteristical for this place is the great weather, moreover exactly in the month of August there is a perfect sea breeze, which provice excellent conditions for this sport. Palma has been the scene for the King's Cup Regatta for over 20 years.

This sporting event is known as the highest level sailing competition in Spain and the Mediterranean. There have already been 29 editions and since the start it has been characterized as one of the best of this kind in Europe. The main feature of the Copa del Rey is the competition of boats of different sizes. This has caused the competitors many concerns, because depending on the appearance and disappearance of the wind speed and direction, changes in the classification can be very striking.

The King´s Cup regatta originated in 1982, with the help of the National Sailing Association and the Real Club Náutico of Palma, and  since then this sporting event has been improving year after year, to become what it is today, one of the best in Europe. However, the sixteenth edition (1998) that counted 127 participants positioned the King's Cup Regatta as the best in the world. The race reached the highest standard on the level of sail competitions. This success has been achieved through much effort by the organizers and thanks to this the participation in the regatta never drops below a hundred participants in each edition.

IMS system development has been slow and complex, and the Cup became a sort of test to adjust the ratings and thus made the competition between unequally sized ships more fair. On the stage we saw a lot of Spanish come by along the history of the Copa del Rey, among them we can name Cusí ("Rogue", 2000) or Suevos ("Nationale Nederlanden", 1997) and others such as the "Cutty Sark" of Pelayo de la Mata, that won the Cup in 96 and 97, the "Zurich" of Manuel Chirivella (1999) or "Fades" (2000) of José Manuel Cardesín.

All history and prestige of this regatta, together with the expansion of ground facilities and increased resources on the water, cause a continuous growth and improvement of the competition year after year. A must for lovers and fans of this sport, do not miss the 30th edition of the King's Cup Regatta, the address is Real Club Náutico de Palma, San Pedro 1, 07012 Palma (Mallorca).

AurigaCrown Car Hire suggests to visit this magnificent sportive event and to improve your stay in Palma de Mallorca, book your car with us, and you will have all important sites and places to visit on Mallorca within easy reach. You can find more information on car rentals, fleet and prices on our website. The office is located at the airport of Palma.

The Art of Flying.100 years of aviation in Granada

Exhibition Centre Caja de Granada de Puerta Real is hosting a fantastic exhibition that covers 100 years of aviation in Granada, this exhibition takes place until 24 July. The exhibition shows the evolution of aviation in Granada, since its inception in 1911 until today. You will get to know the story through photographs, posters, model airplanes and objects from all eras of aviation. In addition visitors can enjoy film screenings and flight simulators, and so really experience it themselves.

This exhibition has 17 areas from the beginning of aviation in Granada, the main protagonists and of course the first flights in Granada. It also displays aerial views of Granada, the civil war in the air, the golden age of aviation in Granada, model airplanes, skydiving, flying club, air culture workshops, sport aviation and much more.

You will go through stories of aviation in Granada like the one of September 5th 1909 when the first motorized airplane performed a flight in Spain, in a Spanish-made plane, designed by Brunet together with the Spanish pilot Oliver. This was the beginning of a number of similar events in Spain until 1912.

In addition to numerous flights and pilots that marked the history during "Aviation Week", which was to be held in 1910, but was suspended - due to bad weather - until the following year when several flights were scheduled.

During the next years 1913, 1914 and 1915 several aviation events were held in Granada, all as part of the Fiestas del Corpus. It is important to remember that in 1913 Damasell performed a great show with his biplane, an unforgettable flight over Granada, a tour of about 3 kilometres, landing 9 minutes later at the exact same point. This flight brought fame to this pilot in Granada, and so he had to repeat the flight several times.

This led local authorities to prepare an Aviation Contest in 1914, organized by the Real Aeroclub de España, and with criteria of the International Aeronautical Federation, among the pilots we can mention Hedilla Salvador, Julio Adaro, Menéndez Valdés, Jean Maurais.

The Royal Air Club of Spain saved as a legacy a number of documents, photographs, and other objects that survived over the years.

Numerous aviation events used Granada as a platform during the War of Morocco, arriving during the last days of July with a squadron of 16 aircrafts, which subsequently departed for Zeluán, Mador and Monte Arruit in order to provide the isolated units.

You can also explore the history of the Military Aerodrome of Granada, during its different stages and events.

A lot of work and care make this exhibition unique, with the aim to take the visitors to the heart of the aeronautical history of Granada. Do not miss it! Remember that AurigaCrown Car Hire has an office in Granada, where you rent the car that suits you (family, compact, SUV, etc.) and at the best price, to visit the 100 years of aviation in Granada, a very enriching exhibition.
